| Step 1
Cut Salt in Your Diet
Salt increases blood pressure in people who are salt sensitive, and the more salt you eat, the greater the potential rise. Here's how to cut it out of your diet. First, take the saltshaker off the table and avoid adding salt to foods you prepare at home. Second, when reading food labels, choose "reduced sodium" or "no salt added" brands. Third, limit the saltiest offenders, such as soy sauce, deli meats, pickles, canned vegetables, soups, broth, frozen entrées, ketchup, and salad dressings. When dining out, ask your server to prepare your food without added salt. To keep your food interesting, experiment with salt-free herbs, spices, and seasoning blends.
