Ask Dr. Mark Babyatsky How to Beat the Bloat

Q: What should I do to prevent chronic bloating of the abdomen? I've recently quit smoking for three months and gained about 10 pounds. I'm bloated all the time.

Dr. Mark Babyatsky - Experts Landing A:  There may be different contributors to your sensation of bloating. After quitting smoking, your diet may have changed; some diets cause excessive gas that can result in the feeling of bloating or excessive flatulence. Fatty foods and certain legumes, such as beans, cause bloating relatively frequently; a consultation with a nutritionist may help reduce the bloating. Further, your weight gain may be primarily in the abdominal region and be responsible for the bloating sensation. Dietary restrictions and an active exercise regimen should reduce the bloating sensation and help to reverse the weight gain.
